Knowing
What Causes The Different Types Of Eczema
Eczema is basically a form of dry skin, with the severity of symptoms
varying widely between individuals. It makes sense then to make
sure your skin is not allowed to become excessively dry. Drinking
plenty of fluids helps to keep your skin well hydrated, and can lessen
symptoms over time.
The main activities focused on determining what causes eczema are
centered on establishing what the primary agent is that starts the skin
irritation. Dermatologists are very highly paid and trained
medical professionals who sole
mission in life is to tell us what is causing that rash on our
tummy.
The investigation can get complicated. The more persistent the
inflammation is the more likely that the investigation will move past
the inspection of the skin and require blood tests and allergy
tests. Finding out what causes the eczema we are experiencing can
be quite a challenge.
There are many types of eczema, and all of them come with their own
unique symptoms and treatment options. Because of this, it is best to
make an appointment with your doctor if you suspect that you have some
type of eczema
condition. This way, you can get an accurate diagnosis which will lead
to the most effective treatment plan. The following are three quite
common forms.
Atopic Eczema and Contact Eczema
Atopic eczema is generally a chronic condition that is thought to be
the result of a malfunctioning immune system, and is often hereditary.
The primary symptom
of this type of eczema is inflamed, itchy skin. The treatment plan
revolves around relief of the symptoms, and can include topical
medications as well as wet compresses applied to the area.
Contact eczema is a more localized type of eczema, and is usually the
result of the skin coming in contact with a known
allergen. Treatment can include avoiding the trigger and using over the
counter antihistamines to treat the symptoms that have occurred.
Neurodermatitis, Seborrheic Eczema and Nummular Eczema
Neurodermatitis occurs after a scratch-itch cycle that might have begun
with a bug bite, for example. This type of eczema is best treated by
covering the area to avoid scratching, since this will give the skin a
chance to heal.
Seborrheic dermatitis is a type of eczema that falls into the category
of dandruff or cradle cap. Sometimes a specialized shampoo can help
this condition. Nummular eczema is a more uncommon type of eczema that
primarily occurs in elderly men that have previously suffered with
atopic eczema or allergies.
Stasis Dermatitis
Stasis dermatitis is a type of eczema that irritates the skin on the
lower legs, and can involve circulatory problems as well as the skin
condition. Fluid can accumulate in the lower legs and ankles with this
condition. Treatment for this
rather painful type of eczema may include wearing support stockings or
even surgery on varicose veins. Sometimes wet dressings can relieve the
symptoms as well.
Not all rashes and conditions require professional help. There
are many potions, lotions and treatments available over the counter
that will help alleviate some of the discomfort we are experiencing
with most conditions and in
some cases provide a topical cure.
What causes the eczema in these cases may have been a fleeting exposure
to a chemical we are not used to, or an abrasion of the skin. In
many cases people can help themselves.
If we get a rash, or a skin condition that we have not previously
experienced we should ask ourselves what is different in our
lives. What have I eaten, touched, or been in the vicinity of
that is not in my normal realm of experience. Once we have
determined where we have been and what we have seen, in many cases we
can answer our own question, what caused our eczema?
