What Lasik Laser Vision Correction Is

Millions of people are free to enjoy an active lifestyle they never could have imagined before undergoing the Lasik laser vision correction procedure. The very name of Lasik laser vision correction lets most people know that it corrects poor vision through the use of laser technology, but most individuals are confused when it comes to the finer details.
Exactly what is Lasik laser vision correction? Lasik is short for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, and it helps eliminate or reduce the need for contacts or glasses for many people that are dependent on corrective lenses. Astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness are common refractive errors that can be minimized with the use of the Lasik procedure.

In a procedure that is customized for each person, a cold laser is used to reshape the cornea in order to repair imperfections that cause refractive errors. Imperfections in the cornea's shape are responsible for the different types of errors in refraction. By smoothing out the imperfections and reshaping the eye, the Lasik laser vision correction results in clear vision.
In order to give the laser access to the tissue needing repair, a small flap is cut at the front of the eye, leaving a portion of […]

Laser Eye Surgery? It Is Risky My Brother Says

Tip! The way Lasik eye surgery works is relatively simple, fast and with minimal pain. And fortunately, the price of lasik eye surgery is becoming more affordable.

I wear eyeglasses because when I was small I used to love reading books, still do but as a result, as my mum says, my eyesight is weak. My family members are lucky because they don't need any aid for vision. I have been called many names for wearing eyeglasses, including "4 eyes" and "scientist".

I have tried wearing contact lenses; they are one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century but unfortunately they didn't work out for me. This is because I have a habit of washing my face and splashing my eyes, during washing 2 or 3 times a day with cold water. I lost quite a few contact lenses as a result. I stopped splashing my eyes with cold water when my mum threatened me that she would put cello tap on my eyes. Still those were not a good choice for me because I suffer from hay fever, and I constantly have to rub my eyes and put eye drops, especially in summer when the pollen count is higher.

Tip! It is important to follow the doctor's instructions specifically, as it is with all medical procedures. Proper rest and the administering of any necessarily prescriptions is important to the completion of a successful Lasik eye surgery process.

Some people are lucky, doesn't matter whichever eyeglasses they wear they look cool and intelligent. I am not one of those lucky ones I suppose and which my brother reminds me almost everyday. When I first heard about laser eye surgery I thought that my prayers have been answered. Finally a way for me to get rid of my glasses and contact lenses, I thought. Is it?

While laser eye surgery could be the best solution for someone like myself but this is not without certain risks. The word surgery itself is quite scary, but the good news it, it takes less then a minute for the laser procedure. The problem is you have to be the right candidate for it. Which means if you decide to have eye surgery and contact the laser eye clinic, the eye professional will ask you or give you a list of questions to answer. Based upon your answers and medical history, the eye professional will decide the best option for you. In some cases eye professional might show you the door, because it might be better for you not to have the eye surgery.

Tip! Lasik eye surgery is popular because of the general ease of the procedure. Patients discuss a relative lack of pain after Lasik eye surgery and almost immediate occurrence of excellent vision.

The procedure actually involves removing a hair thin part of your cornea for the best vision to be achieved. The good thing is it can cure imperfections in the eyes, nearsightedness, farsightedness or even astigmatism. It takes few days for recovery but after that your eyes are cured and you won't need any aid for vision. The risk is low with laser eye surgery because the decision is not in your hand. You can decide to get the eye surgery but if you are not the best candidate your surgeon will refuse to carry out because of the risks involved.

Even if you are the best candidate the eye professional will still inform you about the risks involved after the surgery. Since computer is used for controlling laser to remove tissue, you can be assured that the procedure or surgery will be almost perfect. As with any other surgery, you must remember that no surgeon in his right mind would give you any sort of guarantee. Some people have complained about night vision problem and light sensitivity after the surgery but the numbers are very small. Some statistic shows problems of about 3 to 4 in 5000 so realistically numbers are very small.

Tip! This page is dedicated to providing you with the knowledge you need when considering laser eye surgery. This procedure can be a bit intimidating for people and hopefully you will feel much more comfortable about it once you have read this.

Other risks of laser eye surgery, which have been noted in some people, include double vision, dry eye syndrome, I have mentioned already about light sensitivity and night vision problems. Some people would still need eyeglasses even after the surgery. These are the risks your eye professional or surgeon will inform you as well. You must remember to inform eye surgeon your medical history, any eye diseases you might have, even if you suffer from hay fever you must inform your eye surgeon.

So far the statistic shows that there is improvement in vision but not all of them who have got it done achieved a perfect vision. As the time progresses we would be able to find more about it in few years time. One thing is for sure laser eye surgery is here to stay, because the eye surgeons are much more careful and the success rate is higher and is ever increasing day by day. Another good news is the prices are also going down day by day as the people are queuing up to get it done.

A word of warning, if you have family members like mine then it would be best if you let them know about it after you have gone through the eye surgery. My brother did a very through research on the risks and negative side of laser eye surgery. Even he discovered few eye surgeons who wear eyeglasses themselves. I truly confess that it is impossible for me to win an argument with my brother. But this time I am sure that I am on the winning side. You can find more information on the following website address and I hope this would be helpful to you.

Tip! Lasik eye surgery is a surgical procedure, but one can essentially come and go from the hospital before and after the procedure with little to no assistance. The procedure takes place while the patient is conscious although sometimes a mild sedative is given to the patient upon advice of the surgeon.

Laser Eye Surgery Procedure: Effect and Risk

Tip! Laser eye surgery is virtually pain free as the cornea is anesthetized using special drops. There may be mild discomfort when the anesthetic wears off but this irritation should be minor and last only a few hours.

The LASIK procedure

Every patient goes through a full series of eye tests and examinations before consulting with the surgeon to talk about and plan the specifics of personal visual correction.

For the laser surgery itself, you sit comfortably in a professional chair which is tilt back to a horizontal position. Experience with current anesthetics and analgesics mean that no injections are needed. The eye is anaesthetized with drops, to guarantee a painless experience. The lids are gently held open with a lid support. You look at a flashing red light while the laser uses cold energy pulsed to accurately vaporize microscopic layers of tissue to correct the focus. The actual laser surgery time ranges from 10 to 90 seconds in the majority of cases. You will be in the surgery suite for about 15 minutes.

Tip! The way Lasik eye surgery works is relatively simple, fast and with minimal pain. And fortunately, the price of lasik eye surgery is becoming more affordable.

LASIK and long term effects

There is a 9 year follow-up of patients undergoing laser vision correction surgery, and it is very stable. The behavior of an eye that has had LASIK parallels the behavior of a normal eye that has not had LASIK surgery. LASIK has been performed since 1991, and based on what we have learned from doing eye surgery over time, we know that if an eye is stable in its vision after 2 years, then it should remain stable at 20 years and more. The eye behaves in a predictable manner. If a visual result from laser vision correction surgery is stable after 9 years, it should remain stable over a lifetime.

Risks and side effects of LASIK

LASIK adds a controlled lamellar keratectomy to the refractive laser ablation. The laser power treatment is thus performed under the surface of the cornea with some change in risks and benefits of the procedure. The potential risks of LASIK include:

Creating a cap of corneal tissue and not a flap: by fully removing the top of the cornea instead of just lifting it. The removed tissue still heals back into place but require extra care in positioning.

Tip! This page is dedicated to providing you with the knowledge you need when considering laser eye surgery. This procedure can be a bit intimidating for people and hopefully you will feel much more comfortable about it once you have read this.

There can be loss or damage of the corneal cap.

Infection can occur; very rare and usually controlled with medications.

Induced regular or irregular astigmatism.

Epithelial tissue growth underneath the new corneal flap. It can usually be solved by lifting the flap and gently removing these tissue cells.

Increased or decreased response to surgery: Surgery can usually be enhanced or modified by lifting the cap to remove more tissue with the laser. Sometimes other types of surgery can be joint with LASIK to get better results.

Side effects are generally minimal with LASIK surgery since most of the surface of the cornea has not been affected by the surgery. But still, people who have the surgery may experience some light sensitivity and glare for a few days or weeks afterwards. Full visual stabilization may take several weeks.

Tip! LASIK or Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis is the latest development in this field and is highly popular. In the year 2005, most of the eye surgery procedures were performed using this technique.
