Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin ailment that focuses mainly in sebum rich areas of the skin. This condition manifests itself as a slight inflammation that eventually results in dry, flaky scales that are commonly found in the scalp and inner ear. Cradle cap in babies and infants is caused by Seborrheic dermatitis. Many parents ask pediatricians for seborrheic dermatitis cures and they are usually told that there are no seborrheic dermatitis cures only ways to manage and control the skin condition.

Causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis’ core cause is unknown although researchers and studies have revealed that it is genetic. Seborrheic dermatitis cures are usually just preventions to this since we do not really know the true cause of it. Change in climate, stress, less than clean hair, some skin disorders and obesity are some of the triggers of the skin condition. The dry, flaky skin can occur in different parts of the head and some other parts trunk.

Common Symptoms of Seborrheic Dermatitis

The symptoms of this skin condition are skin lesions, patches of dry skin, greasy or oily areas of skin, flakes or scales, itchiness, slight inflammation or redness and sometimes hair loss. The affected individual may even find his eyebrows, chin and nose creases filled with dry flaky skin, resembling dandruff, during stressful times or sudden changes in the weather. Other places where these flaky scales may occur are the creases of the body, most commonly in the torso.

Seborrheic Dermatitis Cures

Please note that there are no actual seborrheic dermatitis cures as of yet. The so called seborrheic dermatitis cures are just control and management of the skin condition. Since this skin condition commonly manifests itself in the scalp, the most common management plan for it is to use a medicated shampoo containing mild ketoconazole and a mild corticosteroid cream or mousse. In babies, cradle cap is often controlled by application of a mild shampoo and if it is so bad, a mild corticosteroid cream.

Dermatologists might also find that some other mild shampoos or creams and ointments (for seborrhea in the skin) containing tar, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide and salicylic acid may also be effective as seborrheic dermatitis cures or management for adults. These seborrheic dermatitis “cures” may need to be applied continually as per your medical practitioner’s instructions. Continuous application can help to alleviate the itch and inflammation that comes with the condition and also help to lessen the appearance of dandruff.

Unlike eczema, in which the skin lacks moisture, dermatitis seborrheic is a condition caused by the overproduction of oil glands. Small reddened patches that flake are often the first indication of the condition, which may develop in infants or adults. This condition is most commonly known as dandruff.

Usually, dermatitis seborrhea develops as cradle cap in infants. The scalp is usually covered with thick, yellow scales that are often crusty and difficult to remove. Although not attractive, it usually does not cause infection or itching, and most children outgrow the condition by the age of three.

In adults, dermatitis seborrheic can manifest as patches of red, flaking skin. The condition often occurs in an adult's ear canals, on the face or behind the ears or on the eyebrows or scalp. Adult dermatitis seborrheic can be itchy and embarrassing, and sufferers often complain of dandruff as well.

The condition is caused by oil glands that produce too much sebum, or oil. The excess oil is an ideal breeding ground for a certain type of yeast, and this causes the red, flaky patches.

Since most cases are centered near or on the scalp, treating the area with a specially formulated shampoo may help alleviate the symptoms. Shampoos with zinc pyrithione, like Head and Shoulders have been shown to be effective, as are those containing selenium sulfide, like Selsun Blue. Shampoos containing salicylic acid, like Scalpicin are also quite effective. Often, these shampoos must be alternated for maximum effectiveness. Cases that don't respond to these shampoos are often treated with a steroid lotion or shampoo containing coal tar.

Natural remedies for dandruff include tea tree oil. A few drops added to shampoo seems to be very effective, as are a few drops of grapefruit seed extract. Another popular home remedy is treating hair with a 1:1 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water, allowing the mixture to remain on the head for 15 minutes and then rinsing thoroughly.

Although often embarrassing, dermatitis seborrheic can be easily treated with products from your local mega store or drug store. Don't let those flakes get you down!
